Annual Report - Science and Industry Museum

For a university project we were tasked with designing an annual report for a professional organisation, making this report visually interesting and providing an unique take on information. I was given the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester to research and design a report for.

From my research and exploration I decided to make the report into an exploration of the link between science and industry in Manchester. I did this by illustrating scientific drawings of various items in the museums possession which originate from Manchester and the close surrounding areas. These scientific drawings contrast on a page spread with a photograph of the same object, comparing the differences of scientific ideas with their industrial realities.

In order to tell a story through the report I created a timeline, to show this the book would be presented as a long concertina book, which when stretched out would show the journey of Manchesters scientific and industrial discoveries over the years. The timeline is linked through a single line running through the book, which gradients rainbow across the pages, inspired by the scientific discovery of colour and vision.
To present important financial and visitor information I decided to illustrate the information in a similar scientific style to the scientific drawings appearing in the report. I used the topic of each page of the report to inspire the idea of each infographic. For example I used a hard drive disk on a page including computing presented like a pie chart to show income and expenditure.
