The Assignment
To make a good 3D model you often need references. Making a 3D model is a time-consuming job and must go right at a game company in one go, otherwise you will waste a lot of time. References provide the solution to that problem. First, a concept is made of the required 3D model so that there is a good example for the 3D artist to model after.
When creating concept art, always think of the fact that someone else must be able to model it.
During this period we will make props. Props are objects that fill a game world and make it lively. Sometimes interactive and sometimes only intended as a decoration of a space. In the 3D game art lessons of Maya you will make the 3D model based on references. 

For my prop design for 3Ds Max I wanted to make a sword.
My model shows a gem sword with golden engraving.
I made stone wings on the sword, and half a moon on te bottom of the sword as decoration.
The sword also has a leather handle.
