Prop Making for Theatre and Film

My experience in prop making ranges from theatre to film design. Previously I worked on a circus show targeted at primary school kids in which I had to create a life-size elephant tooth to showcase in the final scene of the show. I made this out of polystyrene then created a solution of Jesmonite to layer over it to create a hard exterior. I then proceeded to sanding down the bumpy texture. I then built up colour using watered-down paint, referring to imagery to make sure I was being accurate in colour and look.

I then worked on more mature theatre, one being a show called ‘Everyman’ in which I create a gravestone out of polystyrene using fabric stiffening methods, applied texture and colour to give off the illusion of it being stone. However, for it to still have the light weight properties of polystyrene to help the transportation of the prop to the theatre space.

More recently, I transformed a space into a movie set for a project at University. For part of this project we had to scale up and make a sign from our set. The materials I used for this included scrap wood, Perspex, LED lighting and paint finishes. I was able to use machinery in the 3D and fabrication studio to construct my sign and the laser cutter to create the lettering.
