There are several popular soccer formations coaches can select from when preparing school teams for an upcoming season. In choosing a formation, or set, coaches should consider both the strengths and weaknesses of their team and, ideally, select a formation that plays to the team’s strengths while mitigating weaknesses.

To begin, the 4-4-2 set is the most widely used in modern soccer, with four defenders, four midfielders, and two strikers allowing for a strong balance between offense and defense. However, teams lacking an athletic, versatile midfielder rotation, particularly central midfielders, should consider whether or not they can manage this formation for an entire game, as these players are tasked with playing high level offense and defense throughout.

The 4-3-3 is set is a similar formation to the 4-4-2, though it sacrifices balance for versatility. Defensive-minded teams can turn the 4-3-3 set into one of the better defensive formations in soccer, while other teams may play their three forwards as strikers, placing great offensive pressure on opposing goal keepers. With that said, the main advantage of the 4-3-3 set comes in the ability to adjust between these extremes on the fly. Teams with coaches or players that lack the ability to adjust tactics in real time would be better served by another formation.

Finally, the 4-2-3-1 formation is used by a number of the sport’s most accomplished coaches. This set has been designed to optimize midfield control, with at least five players occupying the middle third of the field at all times, plus two central defenders. Similar to how the 4-3-3 relies on a tactically inclined team, the 4-2-3-1 requires creative play by forwards in the midfield, otherwise this set can place all of the scoring pressure on a single striker.
