MMIW Portrait Statistics

As mentioned in the previous post I was working on the images that Shawn had taken of me as he needed a test model and knew I wanted to include the red hand print into the shot. MMIW is something that is important to me as its something that is on my mind every day, to help bring awareness and understanding as there is much to be learned still.

That is why I also wanted to include some statistics along with the images to also help people understand what it is that Indigenous people are fighting for. Our youth, women and men go missing and sometimes they are found and brought home, other times it becomes a cold case.

I have been with Atlohsa's Okaadenige program for the past year as a volunteer on and off and was inspired by the Okaadenige coordinators Elyssa & Alicia as they work very hard in raising awareness about MMIW, Human Trafficking and bringing awareness to youth so that they know what healthy boundaries are so they are hopefully never put in a position where they may be exploited and teaching parents and many others the warning signs that perhaps something may not be right with their friends, family and children.
