Guest Speakers Will Enliven, Inform the ASCD Conference

A former Illinois elementary school principal, Tara Kristoff has taught a range of subjects in Illinois’ public education system. In addition to her service as a principal, Tara Kristoff has presented to several professional groups, such as the state chapter of the ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development).

The ASDC will hold its annual conference, Empower20, from March 13-16, 2020, in Los Angeles, California. Covering an array of topics, at least 10 people will speak at the meeting:

- LeVar Burton, actor, director, and reading advocate, will speak at the Sunday morning general session about connections between storytelling and technology. He is the founder of Skybrary, a digital literacy platform that has encouraged children to read over 20 million books and watch another 20 million videos.

- Consuelo Kickbusch, a 20-year army veteran and community leader, organized her company, Educational Achievement Services, with the goal of teaching Hispanic cultural values. Kickbusch will deliver the keynote luncheon address on Saturday.

- Akbar Cook of Newark, New Jersey, will speak before the Sunday luncheon. His work as a high school principal serving the material needs of his students has been featured on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

- Henry Winkler, the producer-director-actor best known as Fonzie on Happy Days, will address the Monday general session. He will describe his struggle with dyslexia, as well as his children’s books that encourage others with learning disabilities.
