Granny Design Is 2019’s Big Interior Design Trend

The holder of an MS in advertising/integrated marketing communications from Northwestern University, Susan Brunstrum is the founder and principal of Studio Brunstrum, an interior design company based in Chicago. Susan Brunstrum was recently featured on FOX 32 News in Chicago, where she discussed a big interior design trend in 2019 - granny design.

Granny design borrows from past trends to create unique, visually appealing looks. The design takes popular styles from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s and brings them to life in modern living spaces through thoughtful combinations that highlight homeowners’ personalities.

Granny design took off in the fashion industry before it found its way into interior design. The trend started with high-end fashion brands, such as Gucci, reviving some of their old designs and making them appealing to younger generations. Other brands followed, blending decades-old designs into current pop culture styles in a way that inspired consumers to express their individuality. Once millennials embraced this eclectic form of expression, it naturally found its way into interior design.

Some of the new interior design trends borrowed from the 1970s include Bohemia, rattan, velvet, shag rugs, and color overload. New trends from the 1980s include preppy prints, mixed patterns, and brass hardware and lighting. New trends from the 1990s include floral wallpaper, white color palettes, blue color palettes, and natural oak floors and cabinets.
