The Tell-Tale Heart

In summer 2017 I started this project with a friend of mine. He wanted to make a video of him reading "The tell-tale heart" by Edgar Allan Poe and me making illustrations of the tale. I set the camera on the bookshelf over my desk and started drawing and recording like hell and these illustrations are the result! Then unfortunately he never finished recording the tale and editing the video but I'm confident that, sooner or later, I'll see the final product of my effort.

Anyway, this project dates back to when I was deep into my calligraphy / hand lettering period. As you can see I never practiced enough to get a really confident stroke, but in this case it's -not- good enough to enhance the insane and twitchy atmospheres of Allan Poe's tales. I've never been a fan of horror books and movies but somehow I happen to be oddly good at drawing creepy and disturbing things. The illustrations and their titles capture the nodal points of the story, so I took inspiration from horror / thriller movies' posters, not properly depicting the scenes but trying to replicate sensations and images emerging in my mind while reading the tale, then mixing the words with them.

To make these illustrations i used a Pentel Brush Pen, a self-made Cola-pen, drawing and calligraphy nibs, brushes, black sumi ink, opaque white calligraphy ink and a mix of walnut and red calligraphy ink.
