Double-Feature Movie Poster

Double-Feature Movie Poster
I was tasked to design a poster for a double-feature movie screening about films my friends in two Rovaniemi production teams had made. ("Seita" by Karvareuhka Productions and "Jouko Vailla Tulevaisuutta" by Huvikumpu Films) This one came together in about two or three sittings by communicating with the teams over instang messaging while I was myself in the Netherlands.

I had an idea to make a split design with the old Star Wars / Hollywood epic style character collages. In the end it was more like French New Wave and better still as these films were made together with friends on a self-publishing basis so it went well with the spirit of things.

Fun fact: I was penned to play the glassed-character in Seita, but was in South-East Asia shoveling elephant poo at the time of production.

Design Alternatives
There were two directions from the production team of Jouko Vailla Tulevaisuutta. They either wanted a similar collage to Seita or a balloon design from existing promotional material. I'm glad they went with the collage one as it makes the poster visually more balanced as well as ties in well with the unity of the double-feature. At this stage the colors were a bit too "Pepsi" for my personal liking.
Outtakes
There were a number of palette options ranging from "Mustard and Ketchup" to "Old School 3D Glasses" and "Cuban Conflict". In the end it was decided that a faded option of the timeless "Red & Blue" was the one to go with.
This one is my favorite of the unused designs. If I recall correctly, the director of Jouko Vailla Tulevaisuutta wanted this "Film Noir" outtake for his wall.
Typography
Then there was choosing the right typography. I initially rooted for the serif ones more as it harkens back to movie posters from the days of yore of Finnish cinema but was quite happy with the eventual choice that the production teams voted for.

It was a challenge setting all the type in nicely. I'm traditionally more for bigger margins but you have to break out of norms sometimes, no?
Finished Poster
In the end there were many different movie aspects coming out from the finished product. Romero zombie movies, westerns, war flicks, relationship dramas… I've also seen both flicks and enjoyed seeing years of friends toil come together. I highly recommend checking them out too when you have the chance! Follow the links at the start.
