Sea Life Drawing

Ian Mackie
Artist, Graphic Designer, Surfer and Freediver.

Born in New Zealand (1967); lived in Fiji, Scotland, East London and now Cape Town. Ian studied and majored in graphic design at East London Technical College. He has worked in top advertising agencies and design studios in London and Cape Town. His passion for travel, and sense of adventure, have a great influence on and feed into his art. For the last seventeen years he has attended figure drawing sessions at the Artists Co-Op in Observatory and previously Brights Studio in Woodstock. A growing passion of Ian’s, is underwater photography. He experiments with this during free-diving in our beautiful oceans. The opportunity came about to showcase his unique recent works entitled “SeaLife Drawing,” which is a combination of both underwater photography and figure drawing. The “SeaLife Drawing” series is a combination of the two genres and includes themes of mystery, Greek Sea gods, nymphs, fantasia and fatal attraction. The dive sites are along Simonstown area, on the False Bay side, and Ouderkraal area on the Atlantic side. The “one breath hold” experience is one of wonderment and awe but has elements of danger. Spiritual, sensual and dreamy filled with the mystery of the sealife experience. He currently works from his studio in Observatory, Cape Town, as a designer, and artist in mixed media; charcoal, pastel and oil painting.

Afrocentrica has evolved from a childhood freedom of exploration and fascination with the "dark continent". It is an expression of a spectrum of elements, ranging from old Africa, nature, tribal face painting and political conflicts. As such, Afrocentrica itself is compartmentalised into different forms of expression and mixed media. I take my cues from stylised forms of African art. My use of white has become an important compositional ingredient in balance and breathing space The intent is to focus single-mindedly on the subject by contrasting rich tonal earth colours with the white textured surface thus creating a contemporary feel. The textured surface generates ambience and moodiness through the play of light over the surface - a dimensional form within itself. To me Africa represents a fusion of contrasts and Afrocentrica portrays this diversity.
