Mecanoo Architecten/Eric van Egeraat
Long before the introduction of BIM I worked with Erick Van Egeraat who at the time was a partner in Mecanoo Architecten to model a free form structure suspended over the courtyard of a bank building in Budapest. Using AutoCAD and a variety of custo AutoLISP scripts I was able to produce drawings that allowed the design of the structure (nicknamed "the Whale") to be refined and related to it's surrounding spaces. In addition my drawings enabled the the production of general arrangement sections, facilitated the set out of support steel in 3D and the production of detailed shop drawings the laminated timber structural framing.
AutoCAD model of Whale showing laminated timber rings and orthogonal openings cut in the copper skin.
Upper level board room with timber laminated framing clearly visible.
Each ring was modelled with the same number of segments and then a skin stretched from node to node to accentuate the organic shape.
The Whale, its surrounding spaces and elements were constructed almost exactly as modelled.
The upper level of the Whale was modelled projecting through and suspended from the roof structure
The exteriror of the Whale is clad in zinc with inset curved glazing.
The 2D projections i generated from the model proved invaluable in for AutoCAD general arrangement cross sections.
2D projections of the structural ribs formed the basis for structural shop drawings. Note the steel support positions also generated from the 3D model.
