Mortal Engines - "The Gut"

Mortal Engines - The Gut

Our brief was to read "Mortal Engines" by Phillip Reeve and to choose a set to design and make at 1:50 scale. I chose to design "The Gut", where cities go once eaten by London to be digested and broken down into pieces which then go onto the "Engineerium" where they are used to enhance London's traction.

I liked the idea of the design being grungy and full of broken scrap pieces of metal which function to further break down other cities. My main inspiration came from the layout of fairgrounds, with Ferris wheel's and carousels. The Ferris wheel inspired the London Eye themed cog wheel which when operational, supplies London with its electricity.

I used the laser-cutter for cutting out the model pieces for the project. It was especially useful when cutting out my uniquely designed railings. It also gave the overall model an authentic rusty effect which further enhanced the idea of the grunginess of the set. We also had to produce technical drawings, material references and visuals for the final set.
My initial sketch model showing the fairground layout, including furnace chimneys, conveyor belts and an elevator terminal.
An example of the laser-cutting, showing how fine detail could be cut out quickly and effectively.
