To Learn: A Study Library

This project was set in the coastal town of St. Andrews and the task was to design a new student library to be used by the university. There was a choice of four sites located in all areas of the town including the cathedral ruin grounds, harbour, town centre and existing library grounds. This design is located in the grounds of the old cathedral which offers great views to the ruins and coast. The site is surrounded by buildings whose primary choice of material is stone, including the cathedral ruins so the libraries main material is vertical timber cladding to show a contrast between the old and new. The brief required it had a variety of quiet and group study spaces for students, a lecture room, an exhibition space, a computer lab and a private residence for a visiting professor with their own personal connection.

Drawings not to scale.
