La Rayuela
Book Design
The purpose of the “La Rayuela/Hopscotch” project, was tostretch the conventional idea of what a book denotes. This book as an objectconceptually intertwines its text with image, emphasizing crucial conceptstreated in a holistic composition. It is inspired by the novel, “Hopscotch”-“La Rayuela”, in it’s original Spanish- by Julio Cortazar (1963). It is a novelmuch like the later “choose- your- own- adventure” books which allows thereader, at the end of certain chapters, to jump to other suggested chaptersresulting in different story endings. My representation of this novel is in formof its title: a hopscotch pattern. It follows the interactive intentions of thebook’s original arrangement, but taken to a literal level. The puzzle/ bookdirectly demonstrates a playful nature where interaction with the user allowsvarious combinations due to an open configuration with few restrictions. Itemulates the subjective and unpredictable journey through Cortazar’s Hopscotchstory in that the interchangeable pieces also allow an interactive experiencebetween the reader and the object itself, as well as the sequence of thestory.
