3D Rings
3D Form & Space: Project 1
Our first project was to model, texture, and light an inanimate object in 3D using Cinema 4D. I had a difficult time deciding on an object and finally decided on rings, which at first seemed simple enough to accomplish, but, boy, I underestimated my task. The organic ring proved to be a challenging model, especially since I was new to 3D, but I accomplished it nonetheless.

For the materials I needed to create a reflective surface for the metals, but because it was jewelry I needed to make it a refined texture. It needed to be very smooth and soft, while retaining a crisp metallic reflection and glow.

Finally, the lighting, especially of the diamonds. It took some time, but with particular placement of lights and tweaks to some settings I created a strong enough refraction within the diamonds for a more realistic look. I then utilized caustics to create glowing reflections on the floor to give it that kick.

This piece taught me how essential textures and lighting are to produce a realistic and gorgeous piece, and how horrible rendering times can be. :D
