Tasked with choosing a famous figure and combining a collage of images associated with that person with their portrait, I chose my old friend Edgar Allen Poe. Rather than go with the typical dark house and lots of black and white images I chose to surround him by the colorful vintage horror movie posters his writings inspired. Poe himself is painted on the text of his writings layered, cut out and pasted in his shape on top of the collage of movie poster prints.
This was my rough layout to plan my piece and troubleshoot any issues before going to drawing and final art.

flock of birds was masked for first pass of darks, masks removed and underpainting complete with layers of red and yellow
