Emoji (Emoticon) faces are a new way to connect to others without the use of words.
The process starts from looking at emotions of people-and how they facially express their feelings. Then after looking at a certain emotion that looks interesting-work with the features of the face to create a thumbnail of the face.
For the Emoji I created I referenced the photos below.
The facial expression the emoji I created doesn't fall under one certain emotion, but falls somewhere in the denial-of-something-they-are-guilty-for expression. This expression is what one would call 'Playing it Cool'.
The thumb nail I created looked like the image below. The face is kept simple but its features express a nervous yet guilty grin of some sort.
To make this piece digital, I take a photo of this thumbnail and uplaod it to the Illustrator program. Now to create the final product, I use the drawing as a base and trace along using digital art tools.
To really give the emoji a 3-D feel, I fill the shapes using the colour gradient tool in Illustrator.
At the end of the drawing, I create the completed emoji below.
