FROM INSIDE TO THE OUTSIDE

People around me have never failed to astound me with their unique and personal gestures and personalities. And hence i believe that people dress to reflect the image they have of themselves and the image that they wants others to see. Therefore, i chose the painting “Metamorphoses of Narcissus” by Salvador Dali as my inspiration for this module. According to me, Narcissus never saw his actual reflection in the water; what he saw was the image he had of himself for all these years and he therefore falls in love with it and dies.
My understanding/ contemplation of this painting made me research about narcissistic personality disorder and i later realised that narcissists are actually scared on the inside whereas they reflect quite the opposite.
I wish to take this concept that i developed through my research forward by creating a range of womenswear ensembles that expresses my concept of the inside to the outside. The range is set to target women in the age group of 25-30 who are free willed, passionate and have an eye for details.
My design process begins with research, goes into observation and interpretation and finally actualising forms. For this project, i started with Dali’s painting and poem along with it. I tried to depict phrases of the poem through pictures from the internet or sketches that i made. Those pictures and sketches gave me a couple of very interesting color pallets. Through my depictions, i realised that i was majorly interested in looking at the narcissistic personality disorder and hence i tried to find more images relating to the same and form a concept around it.
I therefore design the following ensemble depicting my concept using 100% british wool fabric, felt and black glass nylon.
