In my final year of university I worked on a project which was carried out in collaboration with Alstom (a global in power generation) and included the following educational institutions: the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland, FHNW; Merz Akademie Stuttgart, Northumbria University Newcastle upon Tyne and HSE Design School Moscow. Approximately 30 students in five trans-disciplinary teams were tasked to develop augmented reality concepts for smart glasses to be used as future user manuals.
The task of the teams was to start from a disassembly/assembly instruction manual, together with additional information on parts (drawings, tools, EHS, etc.) and to convert this information into an augmented reality supported solution for training workers or for on-site assistance. iPOLE asked participants to think out of the box and redefine what a user manual means in the light of state-of-the art user experience, hardware and software.
