"I want to hug a dragon"

"I want to hug a dragon"
For my 3rd year expansive module I did 'Design for Living: Domestic Object' with Duncan of Jordanstone's Tapestry workshop.

For my final object I chose to make a cushion because, I want to hug a dragon, and cushions are easy to hug.
Inspired by aspects of HBO’s Game of Thrones & House of the Dragon, such as Daenerys’ winter dress from Season 8 and the close up shots of both Viserion & Vermithor's eyes, the cushion features a mix of techniques, materials and colours to give the impression of what I imagine a dragons scales to feel like but in fabric form.
The weaving further away from the eye is dotted to create a the impression of smoother more uniform scales while the ribbed technique around the eye is meant to mimic Daenerys' winter dress and the wrinkles around the eye.

The eye itself is surrounded by suede to create the leathery texture of eyelids, while the dotted and ribbed weaving is separated by an uneven row of scale-mail to recreate the spiky eyebrow/depression that surrounds Viserions' eye.
After doing some visual research I was drawn to Genevieve Griffiths work and her modern geometrical style, so I incorporated that into my own work as the idea was to recreate the texture of a dragon not the image of one, but I still wanted to create something that was visually appealing and could possibly be found in someones house.

Everyone who partook in the Domestic Object module then had their work featured in an exhibition at V&A Dundee.
