I created a poster and additional assets for the play The Metal Children, being shown at Johnson County Community College in September 2024. The play features a writer, Tobin, who find himself defending his book, after it was banned at a school in the heartland of America. Upon visiting the town, he realizes that the local teens who are also defending the book, are doing so in never before seen ways.
To start, I read the play and made a moodboard that consisted of images from live performances of The Metal Children, along with posters that inspired me. More of my inspiration can be found here: https://hgage.dropmark.com/1679129
Then, I cam up with various concepts for the poster design. I ended up going with one that shows the the motel room, which is an important setting for the story. Originally, I just included the bed in the design, but it felt a little boring to me. So, I tried to go for something that looked more like a picture instead of illustrative, but wasn't very happy with the way it turned out. Finally, I ended up with an illustrated motel room, and eventually added to the mess of the room to match the description in the play. Below are my drafts that led up to the final poster.
I then made corresponding assets, the left image being an email header and the right image being meant for a social media post.
