How do you envision the future? Bright lights, night life, rawness, extremes. That is the future that catches my eye. The future I discovered through cyberpunk. Cyberpunk is a science-fiction genre, in which an oppressive society rules, existing a big contrast between the immensely wealthy and desperately poor, and also where technology is extraordinarily advanced, hence the common description: “high tech, low life”.
When it comes to the “high tech” aspect, there are some cyberpunk cities in the society we live in, many of them located in Asia. Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul, and Bangkok, are just some examples. What caught my attention is that, even though those cities are living in the future, they still have a great sense of tradition in their culture, which is no exception for clothing.
For this project I decided to merge one of the most known traditional garments of Japan, the kimono, with the stylistic elements of cyberpunk. Strictly speaking of aesthetics and style, cyberpunk has a lot of bright colours, but also a lot of black, easily associated with the neon street signs and the night, respectively. Additionally, it is crucial to remember that cyberpunk is inherently futuristic, and thus the outfits produced had to reflect that characteristic. The result is “High and Low”, Mumei’s inaugural collection.
