Personal project for a travel agency poster of the Yamashita Park in Yokohama/Japan.
Yamashita Park is a popular waterfront park located in Yokohama, Japan. Situated along the picturesque Yokohama Bay, the park offers stunning views of the bay and the iconic Yokohama skyline. It is one of the city's most famous landmarks and a favorite spot among locals and tourists alike.
Yamashita Park was originally constructed in 1930, making it one of the oldest parks in Yokohama. It was built on reclaimed land using rubble from the Great Kanto Earthquake, which devastated the region in 1923. The park was named after Count Yamashita, a local benefactor who donated a large sum of money for its construction.
The park stretches for about 750 meters along the waterfront, offering ample space for visitors to relax, have picnics, or take leisurely strolls. It features beautifully landscaped gardens with various flowers, trees, and open green spaces. There are also paved promenades and pathways that wind through the park, making it an ideal place for jogging or cycling.
One of the park's most famous attractions is the Hikawa Maru, a retired ocean liner that has been permanently docked there since 1961. The Hikawa Maru served as a passenger and cargo ship from 1930 to 1960 and has now been converted into a museum. Visitors can explore the ship and learn about its history, including its role as a hospital ship during World War II.
Another notable feature of Yamashita Park is the large waterfront plaza adorned with sculptures and monuments. The most iconic sculpture in the park is the "Guardian of Water," a bronze statue of a boy riding a dolphin. This statue has become a symbol of Yamashita Park and is often depicted in promotional materials and postcards.
Yamashita Park also hosts various events and festivals throughout the year, including concerts, art exhibitions, and fireworks displays. During cherry blossom season in spring, the park becomes even more enchanting as hundreds of cherry trees bloom, creating a breathtaking spectacle.
Yamashita Park offers a tranquil and picturesque setting where visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature, learn about maritime history, and take in stunning views of Yokohama Bay.
