Narrative Art: Migration and Identity Prints

Migration and Identity :
Throughout my life, I have struggled with my bicultural identity. Growing up in interior Sindh, I experienced a constant pull from both my heritage culture and my host culture - Rajasthani and Sindhi respectively. Having grandparents who migrated from their native Rajasthan and fought for Pakistan, and built a life in culturally rich Sindh (because of which they had to Assimilate) has been tough to understand.  This research captures the tales that my Grandmother shared about her life during the pre and post partition. These stories accentuate the idea of identity with which most of us are struggling these days. Because of the aftermath of partition and its impact on communities as well as the increase of international migration and globalization, identity has become a complex topic with more and more individuals struggling to construct their particular identities, especially those belonging to two or more cultures. Since the changes in identity are happening at a global level, there is a need for creating both academic and artwork that looks at the change and experiences of people. My work also adds to the effort of increased research on biculturalism and reworking of identity. It is an attempt to share the sentiments and challenges of bicultural people while also normalizing the experience among all populations.
