On 6 February 2023, at 04:17 7.8 earthquake struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria. The epicenter was 37 km Gaziantep. It was followed by a 7.7 earthquake at 13:24.
On the night of the earthquake, heavy rain dominated the city. The darkness of the night and heavy rain reminded us of the images in the movies we watched. It was the disaster of the century. People were screaming for help in the streets and communication was lost. Due to the adverse weather conditions, aid to the regions was difficult to reach and hindered the rescue efforts.
When the sun started to show its face, the sad picture began to emerge.
Many non-governmental organizations, nations, states and everyone mobilized together and ways to bring aid to the region were found.
Historic buildings, roads were either destroyed or badly damaged. Although the number was not clear in the first days, the loss of life exceeded thousands.
This natural disaster went down in history as the disaster of the century.
As of 6 March 2023, more than 52,800 deaths were confirmed: more than 46,100 in Turkey, and more than 6,700 in Syria.
