EVIDENCE OF PERSONALITY & IDENTITY
I expose reality and perception with a camera creating compelling images fraught with ambiguity, thereby imploring the viewer to fill each frame with meaning. Like Rorschach inkblots, I want viewers to recognize that the photo is neutral; ascribed meaning is derived from their own preconceptions and biases. My favorite subject is interpreting a scene, the modern-day equivalent to a cave painting, contrived by another to communicate with random passersby on into time.
It is gratifying to me when viewers appreciate the often anonymous soul of someone invested in creating such scenes; to ponder the message, motives, and desires. And then there is the opportunity for me to do the same. I use this practice to further my spiritual and psychological growth. I think of Plato's allegory of the cave and Freud's use of dreams: "the royal road to the unconscious" -understanding that what I see outside comes from within.
I like to journey solo -a personality detective- with my camera, mainly in the Southern US, searching for these expressions of personality and identity in our world. I have yet to decide if I am finding these scenes or inventing them.
