PIX Photography Quarterly

PIX Photography Quarterly is a magazine distributed free (with digital versions available to download) by the Max Mueller Bhawan / Goethe Institut, New Delhi, India. It is about investigating and engaging with broad and expansive fields of contemporary photographic practice in India, ranging from the application, conceptual standing and adaptability of photography to its subjects: its movement, transmission, appropriation and distinct relation to the allied arts. The PIX collective is driven by a dedicated group of professional practitioners and enthusiasts, and the submission process is open to all.

I designed the template for the first issue and have continued to create the design for every issue since then. The front and back covers are similar for all the issues, with the colour theme of the issue as the variant element. The inside front cover serves as the contents, followed by an editorial section distinguished from the main magazine by its run-on text and beige background colour. The photographers are showcased next, and the inside back cover is reserved for bios.

The main focus of the entire design is, of course, the images, and I occasionally adapt the template for special issues or articles. Text is often poetry rather than prose, and the layout is flexible in order to incorporate this while still retaining the image as the focus of the page. Some photographers require gatefolds to best showcase their work, and we use these quite frequently.
