Sketch #6 Food Photography
For this week’s sketch, I took photos of different assortments of food I had throughout the week, trying different techniques and looks with my food photography. The first photo is of orange chicken at Royal Mandarin in National City, it was already getting dark out and it was raining making lighting difficult. I used the lighting inside the restaurant, and some side lighting from the window to capture this photo. I wanted to show off the crispy and shiny texture of the chicken, so I focused on the chicken itself, but I also arranged a bowl in the background to add some further interest and balance to the composition. The next photo is a top down shot of my breakfast. I wanted to utilize the texture of the cloth to form a more interesting shot. I sprinkled some of the potatoes on top of it, and arranged my coffee in the photo to add to the photo. I actually really enjoyed the simplicity of it and the colors that popped from the salsa. The next photo was taken of my Pho at Pho Ca Dao in San Diego, I wanted to create a photo as soon as the soup came. I used some chopsticks to stage the photo and took a photo of it near the edge of the bowl to use the shape to create a more interesting composition. The last two photos were taken of my Teriyaki Salmon stir fry from Seaside Market in Cardiff. I wanted to emphasize the texture and softness of the salmon, while also using the warmer lighting to highlight the color of it as well. Overall, I had a lot of fun with this project, and spent more time experimenting with more kinds of foods to try to see how I could portray each dish in a different style. Every photo was taken on my Canon Rebel T3 with the EFS 18-55mm kit lens and edited in Adobe Lightroom CC.
