This topic focuses on exploring a variety of facial expressions. I’ve really worked on using observational skills with appropriate techniques and mediums.
I found this topic interesting due to the use of accurate proportions and colours. Here I have used a variety of mediums: pencils, paint and ink to create an effective representation of these people

Etching and ink was an effective way to create outlines and details. I like this technique due to the repeatability and flexibility of results possible.

Here I have taken a portrait of a friend to turn into a gouache painting. I was inspired to use gouache for this piece due to the smooth blend and larger scale of the piece.

Overall, The result of this piece is clean and effective due to the use of different techniques. From under painting with red water colour to allow warm tones to show through, or using a dry, soft brush to blend. This piece clearly focuses on expression.

This final piece is produced with coloured pencils. A peach colour card background was used to create a base for the skin colour, allowing me to easily build up shadows, highlights and details.
I love using coloured pencils for subjects with fine details, such as hair and eyes, due to the possibility to create an unlimited amount of colours!
