Visual identity for Dutch brewery Schilder

A modern take on craft beer for Dutch brewery Schilder

I think designing an identity for a beer brand is on most designers' bucket list. It sure was on mine! So when Arjen, a good friend of mine, started making really nice beers I was quick to ask him be part of his journey by creating a visual identity for his upcoming brand. In the briefing, Arjen let me know he liked Art Deco a lot. Other than that, it was pretty much carte blanche. Let's go!

The logo
The logo is made up with the most basic elements of the name of the brewery. A brush to represent painting (Schilder), a bottle to represent beer (Brouwerij) and together they form a heart to represent the passion for brewing.

A pattern as a bespoke design element
When the logo is brought down to the most basic shape, it is made up from two rectangles tilted in a angle so they touch right at the opposite corners. When repeated, the grid created a pattern on which new and unexpected shapes can be formed.

Different flavours for different purposes
The labels are designed to be relatively easy to transform into the desired look for the various beers. For example, a light and summery beer requires a fresh and clear label, but a dark style again suits dark and heavy beer better. For special editions, the label can be given an overtake.

Endless possibilities
The various ingredients of the visual identity provide the opportunity for endless creative variation in the different expressions that will emerge for Schilder Brewery in the future.
