The Indian streets are a melting pot of Indian culture. They are vital public spaces and movement corridors which serve as a stage where the life drama of the majority of Indians unfolds. The quality of urbanscape determines the liveliness of a city and is a physical set for socio-economic activities to take place. There are various possibilities which make people step into the streets. The activities can be categorized into compulsory, recreational and social activities. Out of which the compulsory activities occur anyhow, the recreational activities are influenced by the physical character of a place. If these are attractive/ inviting then there are good chances of social activities to occur thus improving the quality of city life. This cannot be only achieved by interesting facades but by providing opportunities for experiences. The aim of the research is to study the walkability and spatial character of a street in Bhopal and to access it on the basis of tools provided by Reid Ewing, Handy and Clemente. i.e. Imageability, human scale, enclosure, complexity and transparency and to analyze the walkways based on certain parameters such as Walkability Path Modal conflict, availability of walking paths, availability of crossings, amenities, disability infrastructure, and how they influence the human behavior within the street. The tools are in context with the western countries therefore their applicability in the Indian context would also be accessed.
