Designing for Motion

I was fortunate to win a scholarship to enroll in the Design Bootcamp (winter 2022 edition) taught by the talented designer Mike Frederick at School of Motion, Inc. The lessons and assignments have made me grow as a professional. I definitely feel a before and after the course, which will be reflected in my future works. Here I present the compilation of my homework. Please note that all this work is speculative and created for educational purposes.

Tokyo Throwdown
Tokyo Throwdown is a fictional Dance-Competition tv show that takes place in Japan. The client asked for Title Designs and Boards for the Show Open inspired by the show’s unique location. I used recurrent assets such as circles, silhouettes that refer to Japanese culture, and asymmetric compositions to show movement.

Expedition 100
Nasa is exploring Mars. They asked to give treatment to their footage and to design all GFX for their upcoming show. I made two sets of style frames, with a bold and sharp vibe, based on the look “dramatic and dangerous” the client wanted. Then I proceeded to board one option.

Sprint Unlimited Data
Sprint wanted Art Direction ideas for their “Unlimited Data” ad campaign. They wanted an on-brand customizable offer that was fun to watch and informative about our offer. After investigating the brand, I made two mood boards with different art directions. Then, I designed the one that reflected their wish of a mash-up of lifestyle imagery and graphics.

Diesel Boards
Diesel is hosting an EDM festival in Barcelona and wanted a Design Direction for their :30 commercial that reflected the Diesel brand and with a party vibe. According to my investigation of the brand, Diesel has the vibe of a high-end fashion brand. They distinguish themselves with unconventional approaches, which I reflected on my mood board and final design.

12KM Alternate Look
12 Kilometers is a horror film directed by Mike Pecci. The client needed the opening title card and end card to be designed with some transitions to the footage for the film’s trailer. I based my design on the idea of the noises that can be heard in the trailer, followed by the grungy and horror style the client wanted to convey.

Everlearn
Everlearn.io is a startup that offers online education at a lower cost. The client wanted a :15 brand awareness spot using simple shapes and visual metaphors.  The visual metaphor I used reads: “Everlearn frees you from the weight of loans that can hold you back.” ( balloon= student, weight= loan, ball = Everlearn)

Converse Logo Reveal
Converse wanted a :05 logo reveal animation that speaks to their brand. They asked for something high-end but authentic.
I took the 3D renders they gave me to treat them with cloth textures and give them an indie look.

IBM Smart City
IBM would like to showcase the broader ideas for their new concept, “Smart City,” in a :30 explainer video. They provided a script and wanted the whole spot boarded. In this assignment, I was provided with Brian Gosset’s Illustrations to treat them as I saw appropriate. Composition, transitions, color palette, typography, and new assets were my tasks to make them work in favor of the narrative and aligned to the IBM brand.

Premium Beat
Premium Beat had a script for an Anthem spot called “The Perfect Song.” It talks about how important music is to the creative video process and how great the Premium Beat experience can be. They wanted their entire :30 spot to be boarded out.
I went with an illustrative concept, using simple shapes to maintain the abstract feeling music gives to different individuals to express their desires.
