Gyroscope

It is an art diploma completing five-year studies at the University of Nicholas Copernicus in Toruń.
The creative process of the diploma thesis began while creating a comic book about human emotions.
The story presented on paper was supposed to be a metaphor for negative emotional states. The main character has to face her everyday life and her own mind, which is illustrated through the depths of the ocean. This idea came from watching recordings of deep-sea divers, alone in the dark depths of the sea. Although the content of the film is slightly different from the original, the idea remains the same. In this way, a stop-motion animation was created, using the rotoscopy technique at a speed of thirty frames per second, under the supervision of dr Katarzyna Łyszkowska. The work was entitled Gyroscope. It is a device operating on the principle of conservation of angular momentum. It is used, among others, in a clock, the theme of which appears many times in the animation. Its operation is based on maintaining constant repetitive movement, which can be related to the monotony of routine. The Gyroscope is therefore a story about facing the reality of everyday life, about hidden emotions and regrets. It is an attempt to tell a story with image and sound alone, without narration, so that the interpretation may differ depending on the recipient.
