Project Title: Set Design
The challenge of this project was to select a large scale object to use the details and characteristics of it as inspiration for designing a set. The chosen object is a china cabinet with Queen Anne style legs. Although the Queen Anne furniture style was prominent around the late 1600s to mid 1700s, the style has persisted time later. China cabinets of that style were used a lot during the 1980s, especially in dining rooms and sometimes living rooms, which is where the idea to design a set inspired by the film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off came from. Part of the project was also sourcing the other props that would be used in the set from rentals.
There are a lot of scenes that take place inside Ferris’ house. His bedroom, kitchen, living room, staircase, entrance, and even his bathroom are shown throughout the film. However, his dining room is one of the few places that is not fully seen in the movie. There is only one shot near the beginning where there is a small peek of it, so it was interesting to imagine it.
