Patrick Shrum’s The Off-Duty Cop

A dedicated public servant, Patrick Shrum is a former United States Marine and a police detective. He has received commendations and medals in both professions, including the highest police award, the medal of valor. Currently pursuing a BA in criminal justice, Patrick Shrum is also an author whose works include the published poem The Off-Duty Cop.

The Off-Duty Cop affirms the virtue of the Second Amendment - the right to bear arms. One night, a man enters a store tended by an old man. After paying for his items, the younger man walks out, and two armed masked men appear. They force the old man to the floor face down and rob the store.

The younger man is the first to subdue the robbers, and is then aided by the old man, as both happened to be armed. After the police arrive and investigate, they thank the two for helping to keep the streets safe. The old man is a war veteran, the younger man an off-duty police officer. They share dinner, talk of their time in service, and lament lost American values.
