MIGRATE magazine cover design inspired by African Folklore
2nd year project
2018

With the design of the cover the African myth of Savuri and the Rain Bull. In this story the idea of the male having the illusion of control was a prominent. Also, the fact that this story also has many similarities found in Greek mythology, like the Minitour and Zeus transforming himself into a swan.

With the approach to the design I wanted to place emphasis on the fact that the woman in the story can be seen as a Goddess in a sense that she is mother earth, she sacrificed herself in the beginning to bring rain to the community. There is a paradox between the masculinity of the bull and the femininity of the woman this is shown by the dry bone of the skull and the fynbos flowers and plants, found in the Western Cape area, growing out of the cracks. The cracks are also a symbol of the draught they are experiencing.

I experimented with various mediums such as paper cut outs, colour pencil and watercolour. The watercolour worked better with the final concept to create a flowing trasitional colours.
